Summer Nights Holding My Littles Tight

You guys!!! My babies are getting so big! I can’t even stand it! I honestly don’t feel like I’m getting any older until I look at my kids and see how fast time is passing me by.  Summer always brings with it busy days filled with activities for the kids (or really all of us) like swimming lessons, sports, vacations, family, birthdays and on, and on. I loved taking a little time out to capture my loves right now, as they are.  It was so nice to take a minute just us.  I want to keep them little like this forever but know I can’t. In the meantime, I’ll look through these photos and reminisce about the summer nights we have left and how I want to hold my littles tight for as long as I possibly can. I am so lucky to have such and amazing partner to go through this crazy life with and want to wish that big guy in the center of our world the happiest birthday today! Mikey we love you to the moon and back. You are the glue that holds us all together and the kids just adore you. I am so grateful for you, your love and the way you always put family first!

Making Memories up Provo Canyon

Provo, and the Utah mountains surrounding this city, have beauty written all over them. Combining the surrounding beauty with the Lee family, especially their two cute kiddos, set the stage perfectly for capturing the memories they made together during their family session.  I mean, I love how Utah just throws around it’s beauty like it ain’t no thang. Might as well, take advantage of it and use it to create some beautiful family memories.

I absolutely adore Lindsay and her crew and I feel so lucky to have met her through the wedding industry. In case you don’t know Lindsay runs a KILLER Hair and Make Up business { Lindsay Lee Artistry} and not only do I refer all of my beautiful #brookesbrides to her but she has also done my own Hair and Make up for countless family photos and head shots. Basically, if I am going to have my picture taken professionally I bring HER in to help with damage control! Not only is she talented but DANG is she just about the sweetest person I know and the most genuine of souls! Lindsay and Cam make a killer team as parents and I just LOVE watching their family grow! The last time I had them in front of my camera that beautiful little girl was on the inside of the belly and Dax was SO excited to be a big brother. I think he has the role down! Watching him with her made my little momma heart so happy. They are the cutest little friends and he just LOVES his little sis so much. Any who…looking through these photos I blogged made me laugh all over again. Kids are wild cards. You never know who is gonna show up and you never know if things will end up the way you hope they do! Watching their silly faces and watching them be tickled made me so happy to have incredible clients that PLAY with their kids rather than doing whatever they could to look at the camera. Life isn’t perfect…so don’t expect family photos to be either….am I right?? Just remember to enjoy the moment, it’s fleeting and ever changing, so embrace what comes and hold on tight!

Laguna Canyon

Laguna Canyon with it’s desert feel and natural colors created the perfect neutral setting for the Allegres and their family pictures. I loved  how the pinks and blues stood out so much against the canyon landscape. The girls are adorable and beyond photogenic with their big smiles and bright eyes.  Watching these two little girls giggle, tell secrets, laugh, and tease one another made me homesick for my own sisters! Side note: I also went home trying to convince Michael to try for one more kiddo and give our Charlee girl a little sister. No dice. He didn’t fall for it and closed up shop (the nerve he has!). Ok back on track… Tracy is just about the cutest mom there is (I mean who can pull of cute white pants like her??). I was so excited to finally have our schedules line up while I was in CA and get her and her crew in front of my camera. I absolutely love how she coordinated her colors, but no one was wearing identical outfits or patterns. It gives the image texture and a punch of color and I just love it!  All in all, shooting this family up Laguna Canyon was fun filled and full of laughs.  Tracy, thank you for letting me hang out with you guys for an afternoon! I can’t wait to do it all over gain soon.

Mountain Moments at Big Cottonwood Canyon | Fitch Family | Utah Family Photographer

I am SO excited for today’s Mountain Moments post! For three reasons really….

A – I am showing off an incredibly beautiful family.

B – it’s for one of my most favorite people and wedding industry friend, the famous Kale Fitch!

C – Big cottonwood canyon NEVER disappoints! Those mountains are to die for whether they are covered in snow or super green and create the perfect backdrop for capturing beautiful mountain moments!

Ok but back to Kale…I have known Kale for a while now and met him through weddings.  I have been so lucky to not only get to know him but also his adorable little family! Our kids are almost the same ages and it is so fun to have a fellow entrepreneur to not only talk shop with but talk about balancing home life and work life too! Kale is extremely talented and always my “Go to” guy when it comes to memories and capturing them perfectly!

Mountain Moments

This beautiful Big Cottonwood mountain setting couldn’t have been more perfect for this amazing family of all beautiful girls! Their pastel pinks against the forest green had me swooning! Brit always dresses the girls so cute and this time I even got a few genuine smiles out of them! They are without a doubt the most well behaved children I have ever photographed and I only wish my kids would be HALF as good…I would be in heaven! I apologized to Kale after we shot these knowing full well that my kids were hellions compared to his sweet littles. He definitely got the short end of the stick! Kale, you were meant to be a Daddy to all girls and I can tell how much they love and adore you! Thank you for trusting me with capturing your family each year and allowing me to watch them grow!

Before this post is over, I want to just show off one of the MANY videos Kale has done for me and my family! I never want to forget how wild and crazy my own little crew is, so EVERY year that we do photos, I also hire Kale to do a family video for me. I take pictures of my kids constantly, but the way he films and the way he captures us, tells the perfect story and let’s me hold on to those in between moments and the ones that I never want to forget! Check out our latest family video. It makes my heart burst with joy EVERY time I watch it….even when that’s been like 25 times!

If you have a moment coming up that you never want to forget, then give me a holler here!!!

9 Valentine Ideas and how to make it more meaningful

Valentine floral bouquet

We all know that tomorrow is February 14th, of course, but do you know what to do for your special someone? I thought I would share with you a list of 9 Valentine ideas to make this year’s a little more meaningful. Not saying, I don’t LOVE flowers, jewelry and chocolate but sometimes it’s less about the gift and more about the thought that goes in to it.

Sure, it’s a holiday for all you beautiful couples in love, but guess what? I’m here to share ideas on how to make it so much more than just that aisle at the grocery store full of flowers and a variety of heart shaped goodies. You’ll find fun ideas on how you can make this a day to celebrate all those that you love, or if it’s just the two of you, how to make it a more meaningful day for your ONE and ONLY.

Valentine Ideas shared by Utah photographer Brooke Bakken Valentine Bouquet | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding and Engagment Photographer

1. Make Valentine’s Day a Family Event

This is one valentine idea that I would love to incorporate in to my day – having a special family feast that night. What better way to celebrate than to switch the focus from fighting to find a baby-sitter and waiting at an overcrowded restaurant, to a quiet night in with all of our favorite people. Even if it is just the two of  you as newly weds or celebrating as a couple, sharing a nice well-planned and prepared meal together has romance written all over it.

2. Share love notes

During the week of Valentine’s write cards to each other (even the kids can get in on this). Post them on the mirror in the morning, hide them in the car, or cover the door to the bedroom in heart shaped notes – a heart attack if you will. If you decide to stay in and do a nice meal, this would be the perfect time to share them with each other. You can encourage siblings to write some to each other throughout the week and hide them for each other if you have kids that want to join in on the fun.

3. Write a heartfelt card

Do you want to be part of the huddled masses surrounding the Valentine cards on the day of? That’s not my kind of valentine idea. Here’s an alternative to go along with number 2. Write a personal card that includes all the reasons you first fell in love. What if you included some of the biggest reasons you love them now? Put something on paper that means more than anything Hallmark could come up with.

4. Get away from work and meet up for a day date or lunch

This one doesn’t need a lot of explaining. If you usually go out at night then switching things up for a mid day meal together can mean more than flowers anytime. Better yet, bring flowers with you to your day date. Time together to me says more than eating my weight in See’s chocolates.

5. Remember the little things they say

The best way to be prepared for V-day is to, you guessed it,  prepare. This may seem like a simple concept but it is so easy to let the day sneak up on you. You don’t want to be scrambling for something the day before or even the day of. Nothing says you mean the world to me like a gift you picked out at the supermarket 2 hours ago. I’d love to say this doesn’t happen but if you’ve been to the grocery store on Valentine’s Day, you know what I’m talking about. Is there a specific restaurant they’ve been wanting to try that they mentioned to you? Or maybe a small item they’ve wanted but haven’t taken the time to go get for themselves. It is easy to forget the little things that are casually mentioned but if you do remember them, you’ll be showing not only that you care but that you listen.

6. Serve each other

This may sound elementary and cheesy but remember those little hand made coupon books that littered your parents drawers as a kid?  Maybe that was just at my house. Anyway, how about giving the gift of service.  How nice would a night off from the bedtime negotiations that take place every night be? Or even waking up to breakfast?  Service can go a long way and bring plenty of smiles along the way.

7. Plan an activity together

Again, Valentine’s doesn’t have to mean a fancy dinner out on the town.  Is there something you enjoy going out and doing together?  If so, plan a time to do it!  Even if it isn’t on Valentine’s, or during this week, taking the time to plan an awesome activity gives you both something to look forward to doing together. Now that’s a valentine idea I can get behind.

8. Think of others

I bet you’re wondering why a holiday for couples and love would include an item like this.  One thing I have heard of others doing, is sending out love notes and candy and surprising someone with a Valentine that may be feeling a bit lonely this holiday.

9. Make good use of technology

Sure, everybody loves a good hand written love note on Valentine’s, or really any day for that matter, but with text and email access in the palm of your hand why don’t you go ahead and spam that loved one of yours! With this valentine idea, try to incorporate their favorite things into the day or send some photos from your wedding day, engagement, or any of your firsts together that you’ve captured. I know I’d smile if my husband sent me a picture of anything he knew I loved, even if it was a screenshot of my celebrity crush. No pun inteded, but it sends a message that he knows me and was thinking of me.  It’s a simple way to show you know and care for each other, even down to the littlest quirks.

Bouquet photos | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding and Engagment Photographer

I hope you enjoy these Valentine ideas. It’s the simple and small things that mean the most. The details from your time together, memories you’ve made, moments you’ve captured along the way and the magic that made you fall in love in the first place. Take the time to remember them all with a more meaningful approach to Valentine’s. But remember that doesn’t mean that we don’t all LOVE chocolate and flowers, too. Wink, wink.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

XOXO,

Brooke

Making Time Stand Still | Eden Lee Family | Utah Family Photographer

How Can You Make Time Stand Still?

When you first start having kids you can’t imagine ever forgetting what each one of them looks like in that moment. You patiently await the next milestone of crawling, walking, talking, starting school and on and on without ever thinking you’d want to make time stand still. This is where the importance of capturing those little faces comes in.

You’re too busy thinking you will NEVER forget those individual quirks that are currently providing endless hours of family entertainment to ever think you’d forget this moment in time. Long after the kids have moved out, you will want these memories captured to look back on and remember…the sticky faces, the loving smiles, the 1,000,000 “moms” that were said EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. You get the idea. It’s your life, however messy it is, and you won’t want to forget it.

Your Beautiful Life…

It’s a fact that the busier you get the faster time flies by and before you know it, that parenting phase begins when you become more of a chauffeur and chef, than an attentive mom relishing in every tiny little moment and detail. Then it happens, you realize your babies are growing up too fast and suddenly you want nothing more than to make time stand still.  Your kids are your whole world, your everything, and when you look back on your life these are the moments you are going to remember.  The good and the bad.Playful moment of mother with sonBrooke Bakken captures sibling smiles in childrens portrait Wife smiles and embraces husband while Dad holds crying babiesUtah photographer Brooke Bakken captures the love Dad has for his three boys Brooke Bakken captures the happiness family brings in family portrait session

Even the Messy Parts

The crying, the cleaning up of the same messes and toy over and over again, and the never-ending noise that comes with endless snuggles and begging for one more story and kiss before bed.  It’s a beautiful mess but it’s YOURS and you don’t want to forget anything about it! Guess what?!  I have a solution for you. Just the Two of You

Don’t forget about those rare moments when you experience a glimpse of that peace and quiet that was so present before sticky little fingers, endless fruit snacks, and a favortie Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episode on repeat creating constant background noise in your life. What to Wear for Family Pictures | Johnson Crew | Orange County

Family walking in the desert by Orange County photographer Brooke Bakken

I’m heading to Orange County for 10 GLORIOUS sun-filled days, so I thought it would be fun to feature ONLY Southern California shoots on the blog while I’m out there, starting with the Johnson family’s dreamy desert session! I have known Tiff and her family for the last 6 years and have been doing their family pictures for the last 5! I have LOVED watching them grow. The best part for me has been the friendship with this beautiful mama right here. She has a heart of GOLD and is a phenomenal woman and photographer! Plus I always know I will show up and she will have her family dressed to the NINES! Since their family looks like models I thought I would take the chance to share my thoughts on what to wear for family pictures! Everyone stresses out SO much about this part…and I want to take some of that stress away!

What to wear for family pictures by Orange County photographer Brooke Bakken

What to Wear for Family Pictures

Figuring out what to wear for family pictures doesn’t have to be a huge fight! Let me let you in on a little secret. It’s called “color pallets!” What is fantastic about choosing a color pallet is that all the work has been done for you! There are super smart and creative people out there who have designed pallets for home decorating, fashion, etc. and they will literally TELL you what goes together!

Another trick? Draw colors from your location and incorporate them into your wardrobe. I LOVE how Tiff drew from the beautiful desert color pallet for their family pictures. The soft rose, sage green, sandy neutrals…it all works perfectly together! Another option is to do colors that compliment your location. Look at the color wheel! If your backdrop has a lot of cyan, find a way to incorporate some magenta details. Is your backdrop a stark white like the Salt Flats in Utah or snow? Try something that will POP like bold (not neon) colors.

My last trick? Be careful with patterns. Try and think more TEXTURE and less patterns. Small patterns are fine…as long as they won’t detract from your faces! Avoid large, bold plaids and super-contrasty stripes. Because more often than not, less is more!

Happy Thanksgiving from Brooke Bakken Photography

Utah wedding photographer Brooke Bakken's family photos

I can’t tell you the amount of effort that has gone into getting back on the blogging train…it is a SERIOUS commitment! It takes time, planning and a whole lot of man power but I am so happy to be back! I am even MORE excited to share with you the reason behind WHY the blogging stopped for a while….and I’m not even mad about it!

See these 3 little blessings right here?

Family portraits in Provo Utah in autumn
They are my reason for everything! They are the reason I work so hard, they are the reason I love my job, they are the reason I started this job in the first place, and they are the reason why sometimes I still have things left on my “job plate” to do! They keep me insanely busy but mostly I am just trying to soak up as much of them as humanly possible!
At this time into the year Thanksgiving always has a way of roping me back into real life and showing me what truly matters! It always has great timing after crazy wedding season and I could not be more grateful for so many things in my life. I have been blessed with an amazing man/best friend, supportive husband and an awesome baby daddy (they are all in reference to the same person BTW). Michael is my rock and I an so thankful he is my biggest cheerleader (on a side note if you know him that’ a really funny visual because homeboy doesn’t do peppy cheer AT ALL)!
I am grateful for my three little blessings and the love, light and laughter they bring to our home. I truly believe each one of them was heaven sent to our family. They each have a unique ability to bring joy, laughter and peace to our family. They teach me on a daily basis and I am so grateful for their unconditional love.
I am grateful for my job and everyone I have met through this job. But let’s be real, is it really a job when you LOVE what you do and you get to celebrate weddings on a weekly basis?! I have met some of the most incredible brides, other photographers, and so many rad vendors through this little network we weave.
I just want to say THANK YOU to each one of you who have supported me, my family and my business. I have officially had a camera in my hands and in the faces of so many for 6 years now! Time ha FLOWN by and I am so grateful for each moment that has molded me into the wife, mother, friend, woman I am today!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Cake Smash | Blaine turns ONE

Mr. Blaine Turns ONE: I can’t believe this is happening!! I can’t believe I am sitting here writing about my BABY turning one! Where has this year gone? Why did it go so dang fast? I am so NOT ready for this little lamb chop to keep getting bigger. Why can’t they stay little??

Blaine, mommy can’t tell you enough just how much she loves you. You were prayed for, hoped for and now you are cared for and adored by everyone who meets you. Your infectious smile and your easy going personality have been such a blessing in our home. Your older brother is still wildly in love with you and your older sister loves helping you grow and learn and play with new toys. They will forever be your biggest fans and your constant cheerleading section. They are the first to pick you up when you fall, the first to hug you when your sad and they constantly fight over who gets to snuggle you every single morning (so usually that means we make a Blainer sandwich).

This last year has been the best year of my life! Each baby has been an incredible blessing but there is something so special about the baby. He has made our family come together more and slow down and enjoy every last minute together. We are so lucky our Heavenly Father has trusted us with his precious cargo and I am SO lucky to be your momma Mr. Blaine. I know there will be bumps along the way but I am so grateful to see that smile every morning and so lucky that I get to be the one to teach you about life and watch you grow (your daddy is too!!).

Happy One Year Mr. Boodoos as the kids would lovingly call you. You make our whole world light up!! And what a difference 365 days makes!! 6 days old on the left-one year on the right! So dang crazy!!

I just can’t get over how tiny they start!! But one thing has remained constant and that’s his smile and his love for momma!

Utah Family Photography | Brereton Fam

Dreamy backlit fall family portrait by Brooke Bakken Photography
Utah Family Photography by Brooke BakkenToday’s Utah family photography post is near and dear to my heart. I have been blessed to watch the Brereton family grow from the very beginning, and each time I get to photograph them it just feels like hanging out with old friends. No matter how long it has been since we have seen each other, we just pick right back up where we left off! I love that they bring out the best in me, and we always get the most amazing, REAL shots with them!
I met Januari and Jess at a bridal fair (my very first one I ever did) on my birthday no less! Januari and I hit it off instantly and then Jess came in to the booth, less than thrilled to be there (but I totally get it and don’t blame him one bit)! After talking for a little while we decided to set up a full consultation for later that week! I was beyond excited at the possibility of shooting their wedding because um HELLO look how gorgeous they are together!!Fall Family Portrait Outfits
Lucky for me the consult went perfect and they booked! From that point forward they have been like family. I trained with Jess in his amazing gym and got to know the groom for the very first time before I truly knew the bride. Jess is an incredible man and was about to become the best father! Januari is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside (so that’s pretty dang hot, right?).
I am THE luckiest girl to call them friends but also to get to watch their family grow year after year. I am grateful for their loyalty, and that in a sea of Utah family photographers, they always trust me. Each year I get to capture what their journey looks like and how their family continues to grow!

Until next year Januari, Jess & Fam!
