Tips to Getting a Jumpstart on Planning Your Wedding

Getting a Jumpstart on Planning Your Big Day

He’s popped the question, (YAY!!!!) but now you’re left asking yourself, “What now?” “Where do I begin,” and “Who do I call first?”  Well, I’m here to help you get a jumpstart on planning your big day and give you some direction on where to start.

Choose Your Team

First, your bridal party will be your biggest supporters so get your team together and stack it full of all of your favorite people; people that you love and trust to help you along your way. Having a strong team means being able to delegate responsibilities to individuals that will help relieve the stress that is sure to be present during the entire planning process.
Budget

Before you can move on with your plans, you have to know what your budget is so a good place to start, once you have you have your support team in place, is to talk to your fiancé and those involved to decide what you have to spend. This will help you know what you can live without and what you can’t.

Hire Professionals

Next, hire professionals for all of your wedding needs. Book your wedding planner. Book your wedding videographer and then find yourself a wedding photographer that will help you feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera. Being a photographer myself, this is a BIG one! Everyone has that someone they know that “takes pictures” but we’re are talking about this BIGGEST. DAY. OF.  YOUR. LIFE! Trust me, find someone that is professional and so you are guaranteed to have your best moments captured and every minute documented.

Pick a date

Pick a few different dates that will work for you and your fiancé and go from there.  Be sure to be mindful of the time of year and what your family and friends will have going on in their lives’ so that everyone you want at your wedding will be able to attend without issue.

Wedding Colors

Choose those wedding colors.  Your wedding is all about you and who you are. You want it to be reflection of your tastes and preferences so, although, current color trends may be beautiful, find something you know you will love. Stay true to your style. Starting early with a color scheme allows you to be on the lookout for decor or items for your wedding while you are in the planning process.

Guest List

Lastly, work on that guest list.  This can be one of the biggest projects in the beginning of the wedding planning process but once it’s done will give you an idea of what wedding venues will accommodate all of your family and friends. A good estimate of who will be attending will help you find the perfect place to hold your wedding/reception.

I hope you found these tips to be helpful! If you need anything or have additional questions, you know who to call!

XOXOXO – Brooke

Wedding Hair and Makeup | Why You Should Hire a Professional

Why You WANT a Hair and Makeup Artist For Your Wedding

Your big day is around the corner and if you’ve been wondering whether or not to hire a professional hair and makeup artist, I’m here to tell you, YES!  You have expectations of your day, right? Like, I don’t know… say, looking your best! Now you may be thinking, I’ve already paid for so many other wedding day services, are you sure I need one? Again, I say, YES! Whether you choose to have one for engagements, bridals, and wedding day, or all of the above, here are a few things to consider in deciding to hire your own. Believe me, you won’t ever regret having a Hair and Makeup Artist (HMUA) there for you on such a big day!

Wedding Makeup

Back to the expectations you have for your day. You’re paying a professional photographer to capture you at your best so why not have a professional make you look your best?! You need to find that someone who has the talent to bring out your natural beauty and keep you looking flawless and radiant on your wedding day. This is a photographers dream! Even the slightest bit of high quality foundation applied by a professional, that sees your natural beauty and then magnifies it, means getting you photo ready in a way that will make your best features pop. Think about getting that close up that could potentially reflect high definition pores, redness, and other imperfections. I mean, I CAN edit you to look fabulous. That is part of what you’re paying your photographer for. I’m just saying, a little makeup can go a long way when it comes to being in front of a camera. Let your wedding day hair and makeup artist do what they do best and let them help you look and feel your best!

Wedding Hair

We’ve covered the importance of makeup but what about hair?  You do your own every day so why would your wedding day be any different? Well, ever woken up to a bad hair day? The last thing you want on your wedding day is a BAD hair day! Think about it. Do you want the added stress of trying to get that last piece of hair to curl when it’s got a mind of it’s own? Don’t even get me started on what I call the frizz halo that occasionally sneaks up as the day goes on.  A professional hairstylist will have all the products and know-how in their arsenal of hair tools to get your hair looking it’s best and finishing it in a way that is sure to last all day and even all night long. However, don’t settle for just anyone that can do a “wedding up-do.”  You want to find a stylist that will work with you and your ideas while staying true to you.  If you never wear your hair up then don’t get talked in to a fancy up do. A good wedding day hair and makeup artist will keep your look natural and in line with you and what you like.

Take Time To Feel Beautiful

Having a flawless and radiant face, and keeping your hair in place doing what it should, is clearly a must for your wedding day and photos but I haven’t mentioned to you my personal favorite of hiring a wedding HMUA; the pampering. We all know that weddings are stressful and there is a seemingly never ending list to get ready.  Adding one more thing like doing your own makeup or hair may seem fine but think about how AMAZING it would be to take some time for yourself while you sit and be pampered.  You don’t want to show up for any photo session frazzled from rushing through your own makeup and hair routine.  Take some time to sit and have the professionals take care of you.  I promise you it will help you get relaxed and ready to show your beautiful self off! Like I said, you won’t ever regret hiring a hair and makeup artist  for your wedding day or photos.  It’s your time of life to look beautiful. You’re ready for that next big step in life so go ahead and show off that beautiful person you are!

Beach Engagements

As you will see, Jenna and Joe invited a very special guest to help with their engagement shoot in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. The weather and the sandy landscape was PERFECT (until a crazy storm showed up halfway through their session…more on that later) for these two. Three if you count  their fur baby special guest!  Jenna was looking stunning. The colors she chose to wear complimented the landscape in a way that added to the entire ocean vibe.  What else can I say other than, these two look like they belong on the beach.

The weather

Here we are having a great time, when all of a sudden the clouds roll in and things get dark, windy, and scary FAST! We all dart for the car as the water starts coming down in BUCKETS! The whole beach practically empties out as car after car leaves. The three of us stay in hopes that we will be able to wait out the storm and still have enough time and sunlight to actually get to the part of the beach where you can see the water and horizon. Well, good things come to those who wait! Not only did we have gorgeous sunlight for a whole 20 minutes, but we had an empty beach on a summer weekend! We had it all to ourselves! These guys were such troopers, and while the last 20 minutes were a complete blur, we have photo evidence that these two are MAGIC together no matter what the circumstance! I cannot wait to be by their side when they say “I DO!” today. It’s going to be one for the books!

Salt Flats Engagements

The sprawling blank canvas that the Salt Flats provide is PERFECT for an engagement shoot! I loved capturing Hannah and Cole here and listening to their love story as I captured them loving each other all through the session.  I can’t help but get ALL the feels every time I get to watch a newly engaged couple interact with each other from behind the camera. These two knew just what to do and were comfortable being themselves, which is always what I want to see happen. Plus, I don’t think it gets any more beautiful than the sunset over the Salt Flats. I’ll let you see for yourself and then you can be the judge. 🙂

How They Met

Cole and Hannah met clear back when they were in middle school but never really talked to each other because they were both so shy. Then they saw each other a couple of times throughout high school but never really got together to hang out then either. Who knew they both secretly thought the other was cute but never said anything to anyone. Ha! Gotta love it!

Love Story

Nowadays it is rare if a love story doesn’t involve social media. Am I right? This love story is no exception. Hannah was living in LA when Cole returned from his LDS mission in the Philippines back to Utah. To Cole’s surprise, Hannah kept popping up in his social media feed. Lucky for Hannah, her birthday was around that time, so Cole messaged her through FB to tell wish her well and the conversation kept going from there. They talked for a few months and once Hannah was back in Utah over Christmas they decided to meet up at Temple Square with friends to view the lights.  They didn’t want to tell each other goodbye that night so luckily New Year’s was right around the corner and Cole took her out on their second date. The two enjoyed dessert at the Chocolate, followed by games at a friend’s house. They talked for hours and Cole didn’t leave to drive home until 3am! While they were together Hannah introduce Cole to her favorite band, Oh Wonder, who would be playing in LA in the coming weeks so she nonchalantly invited him, thinking he’d never come. Well, he did! He came down with a friend. They loved every minute together and talked about how they felt about each other and the distance, had a first kiss on the rooftop overlooking LA and started a long distance relationship.Couple during engagments | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer | Utah Engagement Photography Utah Salt Flats | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer | Utah Engagement Photography

Falling In Love

One night when Cole and Hannah were talking over FaceTime, which was happening more and more, Cole looked at her with a huge smile and said, “I can’t go any longer with out telling you…. Hannah, I love you.”  After freaking out for a second, she told him she loved him too. The first time they really knew it, was when Hannah was going back to LA for a really long time. As they said their goodbyes they both cried but it wasn’t until Cole walked away out of sight that he broke down in tears. They figured all of those tears must show how much they really love each other. They described it as a hard night but also the best night because that’s when they both really knew they loved each other. A LOT!Salt Flats Engagement Photo Session | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer

The Proposal

Cole and his family came down to visit Hannah in LA for her graduation. While there, they went out to dinner and then a long drive before heading back to Hannah’s apartment. He wanted her to come up to the roof with him, which she fought him on doing right away because she wanted to get comfy first (her favorite thing). He convinced her to head upstairs, where she found rose petals spread all around, pictures of them hanging, more roses, and lit candles. It took Hannah a second to realize all of it was actually for her. She turned around to look at Cole and noticed he had tears in his eyes. He said, “I have one question for you…” then he knelt down and asked, “Can I be yours forever?” and of course she said YES! She didn’t even realize there were people up there until after everything had happened! Both of their families were there, along with roommates, and they were responsible for setting it all up. Well done friends and family! And well done Cole! Way to pull off a surprise!Engagement poses | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer | Utah Engagement Photography Engagement session at the Salt Flats | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer | Utah Engagement Photography

What They Love Most

Hannah and Cole both love that they understand each other. They share the same interests and everything they do in their lives seems to complement one another. They both love how they are absolutely massive in height (her words) and Hannah told me they turn heads when they walk in a room. The two are adventurous. They both know why they are here on this earth and what their goal is in this life is. Then add to that list snuggling. What’s not to love about being a snuggler?Salt Flats Engagement Photo Session | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer

What They Love Doing Together

When it comes to taking pictures, they both love it. Same with binge watching TV shows together. Dessert is another; making chocolate covered pretzels and chocolate covered strawberries together because that was the treat they had on the first night of their honeymoon. They love to travel together with our new little pup Romeo. Hannah and Cole also love to design together, read together, shop, and going on adventures to find good records for their record player. The two both love finding new music artists and going to their concerts when they come to town. Sitting and snuggling while they talk about their day also makes the list, along with  pretty much anything and everything as long as they do it together. What to wear for engagements | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer | Utah Engagement Photography What to wear for engagements | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer | Utah Engagement Photography

Looking Forward To…

These two are looking forward to creating a life together and building a strong family that loves one another. Both of them look forward to working together through thick and thin, the bad and the good, to never stop loving one another, always looking out for each other, and lastly, always finding the best in each other no matter the situation. They want a life full of fun, adventure, traveling, creating, designing, and love.Salt Flats Engagement Photo Session | Brooke Bakken | Utah Wedding Photographer

3 Reasons Why You Want Engagement Photos Taken

Before we get in to the nitty gritty of why you will want engagement photos taken, let me first introduce you to Chelsey and Kyle. I feel like I can’t go on without first taking a minute to talk about how much these two are in love. Sometimes you get to shoot a couple and the chemistry, romance, and LOVE is so intense it is almost palpable. The presence of their  love for each other in their engagement photos is straight up AH-MAZING! This brings me to reason number 1 on why you want your own engagements.

Hollywood Sign | Brooke Bakken | Southern California Engagement Photographer Outisde the Griffith Park Observatory | Brooke Bakken | Southern California Engagement Photographer

Reason #1 Why You Should Have Engagement Photos Taken

You’re young, you’re in love, and your life is about to change.  Why wouldn’t you want to capture these moments? There is nothing else like it that you will ever experience. Before you know it you’ll have littles ruling the roost, be busy with work and life, and be celebrating your first 10 years together before you know it. Trust me when I say, you’ll want these moments captured so you can look back and remember those moments. Those moments of love, laughter, togetherness, companionship, and friendship. This person is your best friend, your confidante, your everything. Capture those feelings and emotions. Remember that saying, “a picture is worth 1,000 words,” I think you get the point.

Reason #2 Why You Should Have Engagement Photos Taken

Location! You get to select a place that reflects something meaningful to the two of you and have it shine center stage. Where is that place the two of you first met? Or that special location that has sentimental meaning for just the two of you? Where did you have your first kiss? Your first date? Your proposal? No pun intended, but are you getting the picture? Capture that location as part of your engagements and have it help you tell the very beginning of your love story together. It will keep that place with you forever as you have these images to look back and remember over many, many years together.

Reason #3 Why You Should Have Engagement Photos Taken

This might be my favorite, only because I have met so many incredible couples and individuals because of my job. Not only that, but I have been blessed to be a part of so many special moments because of this next one. Any guesses? It’s all about choosing a wedding photographer! Yes, choose that wedding photographer first and then book an engagement session with them. Having an engagement session gives you an opportunity to develop a relationship with your photographer before your big day.  For many couples this is the first time they are in front of a camera, especially together. NOBODY wants to be caught being uncomfortable in front of the camera on their wedding day! I promise you this one will make a HUGE difference in the outcome of your wedding images.  During engagement photos I love to take note of how the two of you interact with each other, and what your individual personalities are. Those little quirks are what will help capture moments on your wedding day that are unique to just the two of you.

Irvine Regional Park

Can we talk about how these two picked out the most beautiful colors to wear at this location, the Irvine Regional Park, in southern California? I LOVE their photos almost as much as I love that spring is starting to make an appearance here in Utah. You know I am so done with winter. Take a look for yourself and you’ll see what I am talking about.  SOOOO beautiful!!!

Joey + Paniz Irvine Regional Park CA | Brooke Bakken | Orange County Engagement PhotographerHow They Met

Joey had been working for a pharmaceutical company when Paniz had happened to be training with the receptionist as a floater. After she first saw him in the kitchen she asked the receptionist “who is the guy with the green Hurley shirt and blazer?!” The receptionist then played Cupid and had him stop and chat every time he walked by the reception area. Later Paniz was in the kitchen eating lunch and he came and sat to eat too. They started chatting and somehow Instagram was brought up. She told him to follow her which he did and then he added her on FB too and messaged her his number! What would we do without technology!!

Love Story

She actually sent her number right back. This is not normally something she would do because Paniz says she likes to play hard to get! She was feeling a little more carefree and decided she would open up and have a little fun!It was  good state of mind to be in because they soon were haning out! They hung out once with friends, but then she didn’t hear from him for 2 weeks! But the next time she was covering for the receptionist at his work again, he saw her and texted all excited and asked her to go to lunch with him. He admitted that after they had hung out and partied with all their friends, he thought maybe he had partied too hard and thought she probably wasn’t interested anymore. After that day, they hung out all the time. A month later she would meet his parents and they officially became boyfriend and girlfriend.

Falling in Love

Joey and Paniz admit that they actually started saying “I heart you” to each other soon after they started dating. They both knew the “heart” really meant “love”, but neither of them wanted to take it too fast. Paniz knew she loved Joey because she instantly wanted to be a better person for him.

California engagment photo Brooke Bakken | Orange county engagement photographer The Proposal

Joey purposed on their 3 year anniversary. He told Paniz he wanted to catch the sunset and go to dinner. Little did she know he had a professional photographer posted and ready to capture his beautiful proposal at Treasure Island Park in Laguna Beach. They had a 2 hour long photo shoot after the proposal, then they went to dinner at Mozambique, where he had a booth set up with flowers. What a well laid out proposal. I’ve gotta give Joey props for that! When they got home he had more flowers and wine romantically setup. Well done Joey!

What They Love Most

Paniz says, “We get each other. We always have. From the beginning we have had certain similarities that helped us understand each other, but we also have a lot of differences that helped us grow not only as a couple but also as individuals. Not to mention, we always have a BLAST together!!”

What They Love To Do

Traveling around the globe!!! And playing any kind of game together! They said they are both very competitive so any chance they have to compete, they’ll jump on it! Whether it’s who can win the other person more stuffed animals at the fair, who can collect the most tickets at Dave & Busters, or who is best at bowling, racquetball, board games, ANYTHING!! They also dominate as a team which makes it even more fun!

Looking Forward To

Building a life together! These two have spent the majority of their lives as two halves of a whole, working on their own individual goals and aspirations. This is the point where two becomes one and they get to work alongside each other to reach the goals that they set together. I LOVE this!  It’s the time when all of the most important, life changing adventures begin. It’s when the two halves finally become one whole.
