What to Wear for Family Pictures | Johnson Crew | Orange County

I’m heading to Orange County for 10 GLORIOUS sun-filled days, so I thought it would be fun to feature ONLY Southern California shoots on the blog while I’m out there, starting with the Johnson family’s dreamy desert session! I have known Tiff and her family for the last 6 years and have been doing their family pictures for the last 5! I have LOVED watching them grow. The best part for me has been the friendship with this beautiful mama right here. She has a heart of GOLD and is a phenomenal woman and photographer! Plus I always know I will show up and she will have her family dressed to the NINES! Since their family looks like models I thought I would take the chance to share my thoughts on what to wear for family pictures! Everyone stresses out SO much about this part…and I want to take some of that stress away!

What to Wear for Family Pictures

Figuring out what to wear for family pictures doesn’t have to be a huge fight! Let me let you in on a little secret. It’s called “color pallets!” What is fantastic about choosing a color pallet is that all the work has been done for you! There are super smart and creative people out there who have designed pallets for home decorating, fashion, etc. and they will literally TELL you what goes together!

Another trick? Draw colors from your location and incorporate them into your wardrobe. I LOVE how Tiff drew from the beautiful desert color pallet for their family pictures. The soft rose, sage green, sandy neutrals…it all works perfectly together! Another option is to do colors that compliment your location. Look at the color wheel! If your backdrop has a lot of cyan, find a way to incorporate some magenta details. Is your backdrop a stark white like the Salt Flats in Utah or snow? Try something that will POP like bold (not neon) colors.

My last trick? Be careful with patterns. Try and think more TEXTURE and less patterns. Small patterns are fine…as long as they won’t detract from your faces! Avoid large, bold plaids and super-contrasty stripes. Because more often than not, less is more!
