5 Reasons To Choose Black and White Images

There’s something special about black and white images, don’t you think? They seem to hold a timeless and artistic appeal that can evoke strong emotions and convey a sense of depth and mood that the same image in color won’t bring out.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE colored images, but those black and white ones– sometimes, there are just no accurate words. There’s a quote by Ted Grant that says  “When you photograph in color, you photograph their clothes, but when you photograph in black and white you’re photographing their souls”.

That might come close.

But if that didn’t convince you on black and white images, here are five reasons to choose black and white images– whether you’re a photographer, or if you’re simply trying to decide which images deserve a spot on your wall!

5 Reasons To Choose Black and White Images

  1. Black and white images have a timeless and classic appeal. It’s a quality that transcends trends and can be appreciated across generations. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and convey a certain elegance and sophistication.
  2. Without the distraction of color, black and white images highlight visual elements to create a more visually striking and impactful image. Sometimes there are elements that don’t work well together in color, but in black and white it focuses on the relationships between them and creates a more cohesive end result.
  3. Black and white images have a way of evoking strong emotions and creating a certain mood. The absence of color encourages viewers to focus on the subject’s expressions, gestures, and the overall atmosphere captured in the photograph. It conveys a sense of drama, melancholy, timelessness, or even certain grittiness.
  4. By eliminating color, you can create a more minimalist and focused composition that directs attention to the subjects – YOU – and enhances the visual storytelling. Black and white images allow the viewer to focus on the essentials of the photograph without being overwhelmed by the vibrant hues.
  5. Having black and white images can also add a particular aesthetic. So whether you are posting them to social media or getting them printed for the walls of your home, you won’t have to worry about the color clashing!

Well, that’s it… 5 reasons to choose black and white images for your home (and your portfolio)! And because you know I can never let you go without sharing one of my couples– here are the color, and black and white images of Gavin and Abby at the SLC capitol, which by the way is one of my favorite places for photos like these.
