10 Tips for Planning an Elopement

Elopements don’t have to be spur of the moment, run off to Vegas events. But if planning a large wedding sounds overwhelming, or you’re looking for something a little more intimate, sometimes all you need is you and the person you love! You can even include the most important people in your life to join you. And if that’s what you’re looking for, then here are 10 tips for planning an elopement of your dreams. Make sure you pay close attention to number three– it’s kind of a big one!

10 Tips for Planning an Elopement

Tip #1: Communicate and Plan Together

Start by having an open and honest conversation with your partner about your elopement vision, priorities, and expectations. Talk about location, style, guest list (if you want anyone else there), and the overall atmosphere that you want to create. Make the decisions together and ensure that you are on the same page throughout the planning process.

Tip #2: Choose the Right Location

Select a location that holds a personal significance or speaks to your sense of adventure! Consider the scenery, privacy, accessibility, and any legal requirements (like permits) that will be necessary for your destination. During Brett and Aurora’s Alaskan elopement, we did their first look on a lake where they fly seaplanes because they are both into aviation. It was the perfect location for the two of them!

Tip #3: Hire a Photographer

Invest in a photographer who has experience capturing intimate ceremonies and knows how to document your love story in a meaningful way. Look for someone who resonates with your style and understands your vision. They can also help guide you with location suggestions, help plan the timeline, and capture beautiful memories of your special day. Whether you have everyone you want there, or you’re doing it on your own, you’ll want these moments captured to cherish and share with others. Told ya #3 was important! 😉

Tip #4: Have a timeline

This tip for planning an elopement is essential– create a loose timeline. Even without all the guests, you want to make sure that you have a smooth and stress-free experience! So consider factors like sunrise/sunset times, lighting conditions, travel times, and any special moments you want to include (like a first look). Having a loose timeline allows for flexibility and spontaneity, because of course some of the most magical moments often arise unexpectedly.

Tip #5: Keep it personal

Elopements are all about intimacy and creating a day that truly reflects you as a couple. Write personalized vows, incorporate meaningful rituals or traditions, and curate an experience that focuses on your love and connection.

Tip #6: Prepare for the elements

If your elopement takes place in an outdoor setting, be prepared for weather conditions. Check the forecast and pack accordingly! Whether it’s sunscreen and bug spray, or warm layers. But don’t stress too much over it. Embrace the unexpected and adapt to the elements because they can add a unique charm to your photos.

Tip #7: Embrace spontaneity and adventure

Elopements offer the freedom to be spontaneous and adventurous so seize the unexpected! Whether it’s climbing a rock, running into the waves, or taking a detour to a hidden spot– embrace the joy and excitement of the moment.

Tip #8: Remember to slow down and connect

It’s exciting, your wedding day. Remember to take intentional moments to slow down and connect with your partner. Pause to take in the surroundings, share private vows or letters, and savor the intimacy of the occasion. These quiet moments will add depth and meaning to your elopement experience.

Tip #9: Celebrate all day

Go somewhere in the morning that has a significant meaning to the two of you that you wouldn’t have been able to have a wedding at. Plan a special meal, arrange a champagne toast, or even have a mini reception to honor your commitment and share the joyous news with your loved ones.

Tip #10: Be present and relish the moment

Above all, be fully present and relish every moment of your day. Let go of any expectations or pressure, and simply enjoy the experience of marrying the love of your life. Trust that everything will unfold beautifully, and be exactly what it’s supposed to be.

Remember, the most important thing is to create an experience that feels authentic, meaningful, and memorable to both of you. It’s a celebration of your love.
