3 Tips for a Successful Beach Session

You all know I love capturing a good family session at the beach. Here are three tips for a successful beach session that will capture not only beautiful images for your walls, but memories that will last a lifetime.

Tip 01: Timing is crucial

For a successful beach session, plan it for an optimal time of day that works best for everyone. The golden hour, which is the hour before sunset, offers soft, warm lighting that adds a beautiful glow to your images. It’s also not as hot, making it a little more comfortable for the family to be out and smiling, instead of melting!

Tip 02: Dress for comfort and coordination

Choose outfits that are comfortable and suitable for the beach environment. Light and breathable fabrics that flow with the ocean breeze are your best bet! Coordinating the family’s outfits with complementary colors is a good way to tie everyone in together giving your images a cohesive look.

Tip 03: Embrace the natural elements

The beach offers a picturesque setting, so make the most of it! Don’t be afraid of walking along the shoreline, having the kids play in the sand, or even getting your feet wet in the waves! Family sessions at the beach allow moments of spontaneity and joy to capture, making the session a memorable one and some authentic reactions in your photos.

I pulled the Lafferty’s family beach session out of the archives because– well, it’s summer and I want to share ALL THE BEACH SESSIONS! We took their baby who was just a few months old to Ocean City, NJ to capture these memories and I think they are absolutely precious. But see for yourself!
